Shot in the Arm for Indian Military: Major Defense Deals with US on Modi’s Agenda

The US is likely to make a strong pitch to sell more arms to India which in recent years has become its largest defense export market.

According to the US daily Wall Street Journal, India will likely discuss plans to buy arms worth billions of dollars from the U.S. as Indian Prime Minister visits Washington over the next five days. The potential deals would help to fortify the fast-expanding defense ties between the two nations and help India to modernize its military to counter a more belligerent China and instability in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Mr. Modi may announce a potential order for 15 Chinook heavy lift helicopters and 22 Apache attack helicopters from Boeing Co. for a combined $2.4 billion, according to people familiar with negotiations. The contract would include engines from General Electric Co., Hellfire missiles from Lockheed Martin Corp. and Stinger missiles from Raytheon Co., the people said.

He is also expected to discuss the potential purchase of 16 S-70B Seahawk multi-role helicopters from Sikorsky for the Indian Navy, the people said. The deal is estimated to be worth about $1 billion. We elicit your comments on this story.
