China is concerned about and intends to more closely monitor the relationships between many of its citizens and the international community with which the country is getting increasingly intertwined.
According to international experts, the jitters felt by the Chinese government are evident in its signing of a new Counterespionage Law, replacing the 1993 National Security Law with an updated set of rules that will more closely target foreign spies and Chinese individuals and organizations who collaborate with them.
The new law was signed a year after the establishment of a National Security Commission, headed by President Xi Jinping, that has been likened to the National Security Agency in the United States.
