India has signed memorandum of understanding to promote mutual industrial cooperation with Taiwan. This move has attracted sharp reaction from Chinese Government because China considers ‘One China’ as the bottom line and there is no compromise on that. The Diplomat, Global Times, and even Bharat Shakti have called it a dangerous move by India. The big question is why should it be termed as redline in Sino-Indian relations when India has already recognised one China policy? It is a question of strategic autonomy of India and in no way India is trespassing any international law.
There are certain issues that need clarification. This move of India is a bilateral economic activity that a sovereign nation is entitled to enter into with another nation. India should not be taking sanction from China with whom it should have economic, political, diplomatic and military cooperation on the principle of equality and mutual interest. To portray it as a leverage/ card in retaliation to the Doklam incident is incorrect assessment. India always respected territorial integrity and sovereignty of large and small nations. India’s stand with regard to South China Sea, Tibet and CEPC has been based on matter of principle and not driven by geopolitics. As a safe guard India must be prepared to face reaction from China that could manifest in aggressive posturing within the neighbourhood, military standoff along the LAC, support to Pak for any provocative actions in Jammu & Kashmir and impetus to insurgent groups through proxies.
