The announcement came during Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s two-day visit to India. On meeting Mr. Dung, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to “quickly operationalize” the $100 million line of credit established during Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s September visit to Hanoi.

The agreements come at a time when the Vietnam, along with several other Southeast Asian nations, is locked in territorial disputes with Beijing over territorial claims in the South China Sea.  There is a common concern in India and Vietnam over China’s reservations over cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the field of defense and oil explorations in the South China Sea.
