USI Conducted a Workshop for the 14-member Senior Executive Course Participants from National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Nigeria

A 14-member Senior Executive Course delegation from National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Nigeria visited USI for a three day workshop from 31 May 2018- 04 June 2018. The delegation was led by Prof. Galadima Habu Shuaibu, Director of Research, NIPSS.

The workshop was conducted to share Indian experience of managing national security with the delegation of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). The speakers from the USI shared Indian experience in dealing with insurgencies, violent extremism and terrorism. The three day workshop included lectures and talks on wide ranging issues.

On 31 May 2018, Maj Gen BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd), Dy Director (Research), USI gave a talk on the topic, “An Overview of India’s National Security Strategy and Structures.” In the second session, he made a presentation on “Left Wing Extremism in India’s Heartland and State Response.”

On 01 June 2018, Maj Gen RPS Bhadauria, VSM (Retd) – Distinguished Fellow talked on the topics “Cross-Border terrorism- An Indian Experience,” and Insurgency in the Northeastern region of India & Its External Linkages.” It was followed by presentation by Maj. Gen Vivek Sehgal, Senior Fellow, CLAWS on “Defeating Militancy in Punjab- India’s Success Story.”

On 04 June 2018, the Nigerian delegation side shared their experience from Delta and Boko Haram insurgency. It was followed by a presentation by Dr Adil Rashid on “Spread of Radical Ideologies-An Indian Response.” The final presentation was made by J.N Choudhury, IPS (Retd), on “Reforms in India’s internal Security Arrangement.”

The interaction was highly fruitful interaction that enabled the two sides to learn from each other’s experience in dealing with insurgencies, violent extremism and terrorism.
