USI organized a RTD with National Institute of Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan on the 22 February 2016. The Japanese delegation was headed by Ms Marie Yashioka Izuyama, Head of Asia-Africa studies, NIDS. The other members were Colonel Kenji Shimzu, Head of the Military Strategic Division and Dr Hirayasu Akutsu Professor at NIDS. The introductory remarks were made by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM AVSM, (Retd) Director USI.
The Japanese Delegation from NIDS
In the first session Ms Marie Yashioka Izuyama spoke on ‘Defence Equipment and Technology’. This was followed by presentation by Colonel Kenji Shimzu who highlighted ‘Japan’s New legislation: The role of Japan’s Defence forces”. Dr Hirayasu Akutsu gave an elaborate presentation on ‘North Korea’s Strategic Situation and Japan’s Response’.
From USI, Dr Roshan Khanijo presented her views on ‘Pakistan-China-Nuclear Linkages and Stability in South Asia’ and Brigadier Sandeep Jain spoke on ‘PLA Modernisation’. The final presentation was given by Commander MH Rajesh on ‘India’s Look East Policy’.
USI Panelists
After the presentations there was an interactive session, where issues pertaining to South China Sea, Nuclear Dynamics in South Asia, East China Sea, and China’s current PLA reforms were discussed.
Exchange of Gifts
The concluding remarks were given by Maj Gen PJ S Sandhu, Dy Director and Editor USI. The event concluded with Ms. Marie Yashioka Izuyama and Maj Gen PJ S Sandhu exchanging gifts.
