India’s Right to Self Defense against Pakistan

Dr Raj Kumar Sharma writes: It is high time that India pushes the envelope further by building a case for such strikes on the basis of international law and past precedents.

Jay Bhattacharjee in his article ‘Let It Be Clear, India Is Fully Entitled To Act In Self Defence Against Pakistan’ has argued “India has been systematically targeted by Pakistan’s official agencies as well as non-state actors. It is fully entitled under international law to defend itself against such violence and aggression by launching pre-emptive attacks on the suspected perpetrators.”

The US has eliminated a number of terrorists in foreign soils. Osama bin Laden was a big catch while they have hunted many in Iraq and Af-Pak region as well. Recently, French media has said that France has eliminated a number of suspected terrorists in Middle East who could target France.

India recently conducted surgical strikes against the Pak based terrorists across the LoC. However, the magnitude of the strikes is not comparable to what the US and France have done. It is high time that India pushes the envelope further by building a case for such strikes on the basis of international law and past precedents.
