Growing Relations between China, Nepal, Bhutan & Myanmar and its Implications for India

The study critically examines growing influence of China in Bhutan, Nepal & Myanmar .It also tries to anaylise the implications for India and recommends policy options in order to enhance India’s relationship with its immediate neighbors’.

India enjoys a natural social, cultural, political and geographical advantage in South Asia, Strategic trends in Nepal COL SAHI
and Myanmar point out to a growing influence of China vis-à-vis India and is also making concerted efforts to woo Bhutan. These developments impact India’s strategic interests and neighborhood policy. China’s increasing influence and efforts to improve its connectivity and enhance trade with South Asian countries is a matter of concern for India. Therefore, India’s policy towards its neighborhood will require a makeover in the light of the political, economic and social changes that are taking place. India needs to review its diplomatic policy to counter the growing economicinfluence of China in the region, and especially in Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar, who need China’s financial assistance and benefit from deepening trading and investment links. This study is thus, a humble attempt; amongst many an informed scholar to study China’s growing influence in Bhutan, Nepal & Myanmar and its implications for India and recommend policy options.


Colonel Subodh Kumar Shahi was commissioned into Mechanised Infantry (Recce & Support) Battalion in 1987. He has attended Defence Services Staff College and is Pursuing PhD from Pondicherry University. He has held many important Staff appointment and commanded 23 Mechanised Battalion (Recce& Support) in J&K. He has been the Director , in Military Training Directorate and Military Advisor to Deputy Chief (IS&T) at Integrated Headquarter of MoD (Army) New Delhi. He has been awarded with Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and GOC-in-C commendation twice for his distinguished service in J&K. He is presently working as Senior Research Fellow at USI, New Delhi.
